Rich Tradition

Celina longhorns

In Celina, tradition isn’t something we look back on, it’s something we carry forward. Established in 1879, with roots stretching back to the 1870s, Celina was built by people who valued hard work, integrity, and community, principles that continue to shape how we grow today. Named by its first postmaster, John T. Mulkey, after his hometown in Tennessee, Celina has always reflected a spirit grounded in heritage and guided by purpose.

First Gigabit city in the State of Texas

That spirit came to life in 1902, when Celina earned the nickname “Rollertown.” Rather than wait for opportunity, residents took action, moving homes and businesses by hand to meet the railroad a mile north. It’s the kind of bold, practical ingenuity that still defines Celina today: forward-moving, but never disconnected from its roots.

As growth accelerates across North Texas, Celina remains committed to building something more meaningful, something lasting. Landmarks like the Celina Historic Square and the Nelson Hotel aren’t just preserved, they’re lived in, gathered around, and woven into the rhythm of daily life. Here, history isn’t behind glass. It stands at the center of a community that values where it came from as much as where it’s going.

This is the Texas you were promised, where character still matters, tradition still leads, and growth is built with intention.

If you are casting about for a good place to make your home you should visit Celina and see for yourself what it has to offer. Some here occasionally think the grass is greener elsewhere and move away, but most of them decide there is no use trying to find a better place in which to live and rear their families, come back and settle down firmly fixed in their belief that trying is a waste of time.
